Travel plug adapter

A device that lets a plug from one country's electrical socket fit into the different-shaped sockets used in another country.

A travel plug adapter changes the physical shape of a plug so it can fit into a wall socket in a country that uses a different socket type, without changing the electrical voltage or current. A universal adapter typically includes several interchangeable pin configurations in one compact unit, covering the main socket types used across most regions, rather than needing a separate adapter for each country visited.

It is important not to confuse a plug adapter with a voltage converter. Most modern electronics, including phone chargers, laptop chargers, and USB power adapters, already accept a wide range of voltages and only need a shape adapter, but some appliances, particularly hair tools and certain older electronics, are built for a single voltage and need an actual converter, not just an adapter, to run safely elsewhere.

When choosing a universal adapter, check that it covers every socket type on your specific itinerary, since some budget models omit less common configurations, and look for built-in USB or USB-C ports if you want to reduce the number of separate chargers packed. A common mistake is assuming any adapter that fits the socket also handles the voltage safely, which is not the case for higher-draw devices built for a single voltage range.
