Sink laundry
Hand-washing clothes in a hotel or hostel sink using soap sheets or travel detergent to keep a small wardrobe wearable.
Sink laundry is the practice of hand-washing a small number of clothing items, usually underwear, socks, and shirts, directly in a hotel or hostel bathroom sink, rather than waiting for a laundromat or paid laundry service. It is one of the main habits that makes a small one-bag wardrobe realistic for trips longer than a few days.
Most sink laundry uses travel-sized liquid detergent or flat soap sheets that dissolve in water, since a full-sized detergent bottle is heavy and often exceeds the 3-1-1 liquid rule for carry-on bags. Merino wool and many quick-dry synthetics are well suited to sink washing because they release dirt easily and dry faster than cotton overnight.
To do it well, wring items thoroughly before hanging them, since excess water is the main reason clothes fail to dry in time, and use a travel clothesline or drape items over an open drawer or hangers near airflow rather than laying them flat. A common mistake is washing too many items at once in a small sink, which leaves everything damp the next morning instead of one or two items properly dry.
