Capsule wardrobe

A small set of clothing items chosen to mix and match into many outfits, reducing how much needs to be packed.

A capsule wardrobe is a deliberately small collection of clothing, usually built around one or two colors or a limited palette, where every top can be paired with every bottom to create several different outfits. For travel, this means packing far fewer individual items than the number of outfits you will actually wear over the course of a trip.

The approach works especially well for one-bag travel because clothing is usually the single heaviest and bulkiest category in a travel bag. A well-planned capsule of around five to seven tops and two or three bottoms, in coordinating colors, can realistically cover a week or more of daily changes when combined with sink laundry partway through the trip.

When building one, start from the climate and activities of the actual trip rather than a generic list, and choose fabrics that layer well together for temperature changes across a day. A common mistake is packing a capsule wardrobe that technically works on paper but includes items the traveler does not actually like wearing, which defeats the point since those pieces end up unused anyway.
