Packing cube

A packing cube is a rectangular zippered pouch, usually made of lightweight nylon or mesh, used to group similar items together inside a larger bag instead of packing everything loose. Most one-bag travelers use a small set of cubes sorted by category, such as tops, bottoms, and underwear, so that any item can be found without unpacking the whole bag.

Compression cubes add a second zipper that squeezes out extra air and volume once the cube is packed, which can meaningfully shrink how much space clothing takes up, though it does not reduce weight. Standard cubes without compression are gentler on delicate fabrics and easier to pack quickly, since there is no second zipper to force closed.

When choosing cubes, match the sizes to your bag's actual compartments rather than buying the largest set available, since oversized cubes waste the corners and curves of a backpack's interior. A common mistake is over-stuffing a compression cube so far that the fabric strains at the seams, which shortens its life and can make items harder to unpack neatly at the other end.
